Vernon Edward Robley, only son of Henry Edward Robley and Ivy Jessie McCallum , was born on 26 December 1892. The family residence was "Tremaine", at Cromwell Crescent, Hawksburn, a suburb of Melbourne. Here he spent his childhood, in a happy home, with his 4 sisters.
Vernon Edward enlisted in the Australian army on 5th August 1915. His rank on enlistment was sergeant, and his unit the AA Pay Corps. He was still living at home at 12 Cromwell Crescent when he joined the army. He described his occupation as a clerk, and was single and aged 23. His rank at the end of WW1 was Captain.
Vernon Edward Robley was awarded the following honour:

Vernon Edward married twice:
1. He married Sophia Winifred Burfitt on 27 October 1819 at St. Stephen's Church in Hampstead, London , "according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England". Vernon is described as a Captain in the A.I.F, and a batchelor, aged 28. Sophia was 23 and a spinster. Sophia was the daughter of Albert Herbert Burfitt and his second wife, Sophia Hall
Sophia died at 104 Shannon Avenue, Newtown, Geelong on July 19th, 1938 aged only 42. Her cause of death was "hyperpiesis and cerebal haemorrhage". At the time of her death her children were aged 18 to 6. Sophia had a Presbyterian burial service.
2. In 1942 Vernon married 43 year old Dora Galbraith.
